In The Cliff of Aval, Etretat (1885), Claude Monet presents the massive precipice with its pierced arch that had by then become an easily recognized image. Despite the familiarity of the scene – the village of Etretat had been transformed by tourists – Monet's presentation is startlingly fresh. His expressive brushwork and vibrant colors suggest an instinctive response to the drama of nature, while his multitude of strokes and touches activate the cliff’s surface and reflect the shifting effects of water, wind, light, and air. This personal approach is further manifested by the extreme sensitivity with which he captures the way the sun illuminates a part of the cliff, and the lapping of the water against the rock face.

The painting is a bequest of Marie Dabek, Paris, to the State of Israel, in memory of Jack and Mimi Dabek, on permanent loan to The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, from the Administrator General of the State of Israel
